Bullfighting is a traditional Hispanic sport that has been very popular for the last millenium in Spain and Portugal. Contrary to popular belief, different forms of bullfighting have existed in Europe, India and America. The fighter who oppses the bull in the ring is knows as the matador and has to outrun the bull, defeat it and in many cases claim victory by killing it.

Many animal rights activists and modernists believe that bullfighting is a cruel sport that threatens the life of the animal as well as the matador. However there are many advantages of bullfighting which are:
  • It is part of tradition and one must respect the fact that bullfighting has been in Hispanic culture for a very long time and is their national sport. Therefore bullfighting creates national unity as all the peopole are united by a common sport.
  • Bullfighting promotes tourism as many tourists visit Spain and neighbouring countries because of the attraction of seeing a matador in action.
  • Bulls are domestic creatures that are most probably slaughtered for their meat and caged and bred for agriculture purposes. Thus when this animal is forced to fight it will die in a more noble manner compared to being slaughtered for the reasons mentioned above.
  • Bullfighting is a much less violent sport compared to boxing or wrestling where humans fight with humans but in bullfighting this is not the case making this sport less savage.
